A Complete Family Picture, National Shrine of Divine Mercy & People Who Believe in Me
Ma. Katherine Guaño
35 years old
What do I do now?
I am currently in charge of the Human Resources Department of the Couples for Christ Global Mission Foundation Inc. where I have been working as a fulltime pastoral worker for the past 15 years or ever since I graduated from college.
Where am I in the world now?
I am now based in Quezon City, Philippines but I used to be on long-term mission based in Africa (one year in Botswana and two years in South Africa.)
What are my interests?
I love reading books and watching movies but recently I am into things I only once thought of doing but haven’t. I like travelling and doing adventures to discover and rediscover places, people and food and to experience life to the full!
What keeps me busy?
Right now, work is keeping me busy ensuring proper policies and guidelines are in place so that lay missionaries may continue to say yes to the calling God has given them. And my “Kaladkarins” friends who always have something for us to do or go to.
My Relationship status?
Right now, I am thankful for:
1. A complete family picture
With all the ups and downs, trials and challenges our family has overcome, a recent complete family picture is a manifestation of God’s grace and faithfulness to us. My brother and brother-in-law are both seafarers so it takes years for us to have everyone in the Philippines at one time. My sister-in-law just gave birth to Gab last December so I now have another handsome nephew and godson in addition to Iñigo, who is the son of my sister.
I am also thankful to the Lord for the gift of forgiveness and healing in our family and for renewed relationships among us.
2. First-time visit to the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Marilao, Bulacan
As I love to travel, it is not only the tourist attractions and sights that interest me. It is always a blessing to go to a place where one’s faith is strengthened. And what is better is that you have friends who are not only with you on physical adventures but also on those that enrich the soul.
What struck me on the way to the Guadalupe Chapel are the many hanging crutches and artificial limbs at the church basement that were left there by the people who experienced miraculous healing. I am thankful because I was reminded that miracles still do happen. As I prayed where the picture of Our Lady is enthroned with flowing water that many pilgrims consider to be healing, I allowed its water to wash over my doubtful heart, and I begged for the grace to be able to let go of my own selfishness and that I may have complete healing of my sickness and from any anger or fear that is still in my heart.
3. Having someone who believes in you during times when you don’t
Many say that high school is the best years of your life. You may agree or not but I have met quite a few of the best people I know during my high school years. One of them is Lea who recently came for a short visit from the US.
Why is she one of the best for me? Because she saw something in me that I did not even know was there and encouraged me to hone it. I was once one of those who were just comfortable where they were. Not failing, but also not excelling. During sophomore year, dear Lea, started to take me with her as she did her student council duties. She made me realize that I too can be someone who made a difference if I would only push myself and believe in something bigger than me. Because of this, I ran and became Student Council Treasurer during our junior and senior year and even excelled academically. Lea would always just laugh at me every time I reminded her of how much she influenced me.
I would forever be thankful for the trust and confidence given me during the times that I didn’t even believe in myself. This is why adding value to people to build them up is one of my advocacies in life.
